In this study, we aimed to determine if phosphodiesterase (PDE) 5 is a possible drug treatment for erectile dysfunction and to examine the possibility that PDE 5 is also a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Methods:We performed a retrospective review of medical records for patients with erectile dysfunction treated with sildenafil citrate and compared it to standard care (Viagra).
Results:The mean age of the study population was 48.5 years. The study included 18,947 patients (0.2%) with erectile dysfunction. Among them, 2,637 (0.4%) were treated with sildenafil citrate. The mean number of sexual partners was 1.7 (0.3) per patient. PDE 5 inhibitors were the most commonly used drugs (3.8%; 95% CI: 3.2-3.8), followed by phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (0.3%; 95% CI: 0.1-0.9) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (0.3%; 95% CI: 0.1-0.8).
Conclusion:PDE 5 inhibitors are a possible treatment option for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and should be considered in patients with erectile dysfunction.
